Framed as a series of letters between a young woman and her closest friend, the book reads like private correspondence.

Adapted from real events, the narrative traces the life of a young woman growing up in a tightly controlled domestic and cultural environment. Across dated letters, she writes about forced matchmaking, economic precarity, sexual coercion, reproductive health crises, religious pressure, family coercion and more. Her voice is unfiltered, sometimes naïve, defiant and contradictory — but always deeply human and deeply women.

What makes A Letter from a Shanquanning Woman unsettling is its familiarity. Oppression here is ordinary. It exists in hospital bills that cannot be paid without compromise, in relatives who equate a woman’s value with marriage and in the fear of reporting violence. The letters expose how systemic gender inequality operates in regions in China through family structures, economic dependency, and social stigma.
