After 48,000+ Votes, Didi’s “Women-Friendly Program” Is Being Piloted in Parts of China, Creating a Safer and More Inclusive Travel Experience

Didi Chuxing is one of China’s leading mobile transportation platforms. Through its mobile app, it provides convenient ride-hailing services by connecting passengers with drivers, meeting a wide range of travel needs such as daily commuting, nighttime travel, and long-distance trips. In recent years, as its user base has become more diverse, Didi has continued to explore more targeted and inclusive service models.

Recently, Didi launched a women-first driver–passenger matching initiative called the “Women-Friendly Program” in China, which is currently being piloted in cities such as Changchun, Beijing, and Shanghai. Female users can access the feature by typing “Women-Friendly Program” into the destination field on the ride-hailing page. Users who are verified as female can choose the option “prioritize calling female drivers all day,” allowing the system to prioritize matching them with drivers who are also verified as female. If a user has not completed female verification, the interface will only display an “invite her to join” button.

This feature was not decided unilaterally by the platform, but was instead shaped through user voting. In the public poll titled “What features would you like Didi to provide?”, a total of 48,450 votes supported allowing female passengers to choose female drivers. This result reflects strong user demand for a safer and more inclusive ride-hailing experience.

By allowing users to voluntarily set their ride preferences, female passengers can feel more secure when traveling at night, heading to remote destinations, or when they are physically unwell. At the same time, the initiative helps reduce safety concerns and psychological pressure for female drivers while on duty. Although the program is still in its pilot phase, there is hope that it will expand to more cities in the future. Didi has stated that it values the experiences of all users and is committed to meeting diverse needs, striving to create a safer and more welcoming travel environment for everyone.
